Tuscan Small Gems
You don’t need a time machine to reach the Middle Ages, or at least to visit them. In the heart of Tuscany there are small villages, gems, that will catapult your mind back to medieval times: palaces, imposing walls and towers, castles and hamlets.
If you feel tired of yourself and need to find yourself again, wash away your doubts, there is no better place than Tuscany in autumn

Siena
Siena, one of the most unique cities in Tuscany, is famous for the Palio, which twice a year (2 July and 16 August) sets the hearts of the Sienese and the 17 contrade that make it up on fire. The Palio is run in Piazza del Campo, the distinctive shell-shaped square.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano is one of the best preserved examples of medieval architecture in all of Europe. A Unesco World Heritage Site, this small town along the Via Francigena is most famous for the medieval towers that tower above its panorama. Of the 72 towers that existed in the town’s heyday, twenty-five remained in 1580 and today there are only fourteen. The oldest is the Rognosa tower, erected in the 13th century.
Volterra
Volterra, mirable example of medieval village, preserves a historical centre dating back to Etruscan times, finds from Roman times and medieval buildings such as the cathedral, the Medici Fortress and the Palazzo dei Priori. Volterra is also renowned for the production of alabaster and ceramics.
Montalcino
Across the Val d’Orcia, a characteristic and carefully cultivated area of Tuscany interrupted at times by picturesque villages and gullies, lies Montalcino, world famous for the production of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. Inhabited since the 9th century, Brunello is produced exclusively on these hills with special organoleptic characteristics that make it a wine loved the world over.
